The weather didn't know what to do and neither did either captain at the toss. After a fair amount of umming and ahhing the Green were put in on a notoriously flat wicket. This decision was most probably because Little Marlow had chased 260 down to win the week before.
With Rick Lashley turning up at the wrong Marlow ground Ben Diab was promoted up the order to partner Suprej Venkat. With Venkat looking decidedly out of nick the week before and seeking out nets in Norfolk where he is working at present... it might be a case of getting the whole team to Norfolk next week for a net session as his chanceless 121 put the Green in a great position to win the match.
Diab started cautiously and Venkat eased into his stride taking 14 from the 2nd over avoiding his usual spectacular lofted drives. The new low risk approach payed dividends as the Green coasted to 87 before Diab, looking to get on with it was stumped for 16. A good opening stand and in comes the inform Mihiru Perera. A nice looking drive follows and out, bowled off the full toss, the wee man isn't happy as he hasn't been out yet this season. 101 - 2 and Venkat is still looking good, he has passed the 50 mark and hits a huge 6 to celebrate.
In comes Jags Dhillon and I can see the run rate climbing a bit here with this pair at the crease. Venkat is now playing low risk shots with some controlled aggression, this is a class knock, not one chance has been given and he looks determined to bring up the 1st league hundred for the Green.
As the team know that Suprej counts his runs, on the moment he passes his 100 we all sit in silence to see if he lifts his bat before we applaud. A few seconds pass and a bemused looking Venkat gives a big grin as the boys give him a standing ovation hoping that a good hundred can turn into a good "big" hundred.
Jags is playing 2nd fiddle as the field is back and becoming frustrated as Marlow introduce Bath who was by far the pick of the bowlers with his medium pace cutters. Jags has gone, holed out to the man at deep mid on for 23. The run rate was going at 8 an over with that pair at the crease. Lets see what ageless Ricky Lashley can do! 172-3, still got the best part of 18 overs to put a score on, 260 being about par on this wicket.
"Ageless", as he will now be known in all match reports is playing a proper innings and having a good look knowing that there is runs to be had and a well paced knock will see us home.
All of a sudden shock horror, Suprej has gone! Thin nick to the keeper off Bath and he is back in the hutch for a magnificent 121. That's the only chance he has given all day. Class knock, good to have him back in form.
All the Green need now is to use their brains and bat properly for 10 overs and leave enough wickets in hand to have a go in the last 5 overs to set a formidible total.
Amit Talhan joins Ageless, crash bang wallop, caught trying to drive length for 7. 188 - 5. In comes Is, crash bang wallop caught trying to drive length for 8. 212 - 5. In comes the Skipper, looking to back up Ageless who is quitely going about his business keeping the run rate at a decent 5 to 6 an over. Skippers gone, yorked by the best ball of the day :) for 6. 242 -7.
9 overs to go and in comes Sal "boom boom" Withana. Out come the big shots including a good effort up the hill for 6. Withana ends up with an exciting 23 off not very many. 264 - 8. We are over the magic 260 and with only 2 overs remaining we might as well bat through. Anand "the other Venkat" sprints out to the crease and he didn't stop sprinting all afternoon. Ageless and Anand put on 25 in 2 overs including 2 big 6's from Ageless to bring up his 50. Well played sir, no.5 might well be your slot this season.
Pick of the bowlers was Bath with 4-74, figures ruined by Ageless's big hitting at the death.
289-8 beat that Little Marlow!
Missed tea as I had to pick the Missus up so can't comment!
Sal and Jags open the bowling, anything not on the spot is disappearing at a rate of knots to the fence. but all in all a good start, they need 6 an over and are at about 4's when after a change of ends Jags strikes with one that's nipped away caught by Is. 29-1 and what looks to be their stroke player has gone.
Jags gets a few more overs in and is then saved for the death. Can't let the Slinger burn himself out now can we! Sal is keeping it tight the other end so stays on for 10.
Amit Talhan is introduced and after his usual loose 1st over is back into his stride. To be fair Little Marlow they are having a go at this but the field is set and the bowlers are bowling to it.
A chance, attempted pull of Amit goes just wide of Saliya, a casual one handed effort gets a glare from the captain. I tell Sal to get annoyed and bowl quicker, it doesn't work he is to nice. I am going to swear at him from the off next week and see if we can get his dander up a bit.
But not to worry Amit has his man next over, Glennester stumped for 48. 95-2. Sal has come off and young Ben Snapes has replaced him. Accurate as ever a big appeal from Is behind the stumps and a 10th of an appeal from the bowler see's Bath LBW for 29. He was looking solid so a good wicket for Ben but you couldn't tell from looking at him.
Another stumping for Amit see's us well in the game at 138-4. Little Marlow still fancy this as the Skipper strolls out. After hitting the winning runs last week, anything within 50 runs in 5 overs will be gettable. Amit gets him playing against the spin leading edge to Diab at mid-on. I think that the draw is the best that they can muster now.
The wicket is still very flat... Amit puts a leg slip in and an over later the no.7 obliges with a leg glance straight to Elliott. Good catch, good catch. The pressure is on Marlow now.
Elliott is on to try and buy a wicket and after palming a return chance which has left an imprint in his hand a great catch from Saliya on the boundary makes up for his earlier efforts in the field. The skipper looks to protect his figures and brings back Jags and Sal. Amit finishes with 4-51 off 13. Pick of the bowlers and the only one that looked signicantly dangerous on this wicket from both sides.
A few drop catches go down as the Green try and finish Marlow off but all in all we accepted it would be a tall order to bowl a team out 2nd on this wicket. Hussein played well for 40 n.o and the Green are left wondering what if they had took all the chances at the end. A bit of work to be done on the fielding but all in all a solid performance that would have beaten most teams.
Suprej is man of the match with his fine 121. But ageless's 50 and Amit's 4-51 also worth a mention. The Green are still top with the winning draw and Marlow in the end will probably be content with a draw as well.
